Starting a Transcription Company
Gwen McCutcheon started her transcription company in 1985. She had been an executive secretary for years in Washington, D.C., and wanted to work for herself. She began by working her business around a full-time job, and then around a half-time job. In 1995, Gwen started using contractors to type, and, in 2002, she hired her first employee. Premium Business Services now has 25 employees and contractors.
Employees and Contractors
Every employee at Premium Business Services contributes.
- Gwen, as CEO and Founder, is responsible for oversight of the company and business development, including recruiting and maintaining clients and contractors.
- Kristine, Director of Operations, is responsible for project and contractor scheduling, proofing, transcript delivery, and accounting.
- Chris, Administrative Manager, is responsible for proofing, reviewing contractor work, and mentoring of contractors.
Contractors make valuable contributions to the success of Premium Business Services. Projects are assigned to them based on their available hours. Contractor performance is determined by quality of work, meeting deadlines, and the ability to produce transcripts from different kinds of projects. For more information on contractor opportunities and performance guidelines, see Contractor Opportunities.
